Derby & District Astronomical Society

Join the friendly and welcoming astronomers of the Derby & District Astronomical Society for this one of their regular monthly group meetings on the first Friday of each month except for July and August. These meetings usually involve a talk by an outside speaker, typically from a university, on some aspect of astronomy or space science and are pitched at a level that everyone can enjoy.

Derby & District Astronomical Society host monthly introduction to astronomy sessions on the third Friday of each month from September to June except for December, to avoid clashing with Christmas. These sessions are aimed specifically at beginners and may include advice and help on using telescopes, finding your way around the night sky, astrophotography etc. You are welcome to bring your telescope, and there may be an opportunity for some observing from the back garden of The Friends Meeting House if weather permits. Weather permitting, astronomers from the Derby & District Astronomical Society hold monthly observing sessions at their Flamsteed Observatory, located near the village of Brailsford. The observatory is home to a 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope which offers excellent views of the planets, Moon and deep sky objects. Members of the Society also bring their telescopes too. During the summer, viewing the Sun using a special solar telescope is possible, and events start a little later in the evening. The Society welcomes beginners and prospective members to these sessions. If you have a telescope, take it along!
