Dark Sky Canoeing on Coniston Water
Friday 8th November 2024 from 15:30pm to 18:30pm
Brown Howe Car Park - Coniston
Brown Howe, Coniston, Cumbria, LA12 8DW
Experience something truly unique. Join us on a tranquil night-time canoe paddle on Coniston Water and enjoy the beauty and vastness of the night sky in the heart of the Lake District.
You will start the guided canoe tour in the daylight, giving you time to get to grips with paddling the canoe. We will journey along Coniston Water and watch as the sun sets over the mountains.
Along the journey, we will stop to enjoy some hot chocolate and to look up and marvel at the stars, identify some constellations and see the beauty of the Milky Way. We’ll show you how to navigate using the stars and share our knowledge of the legends and mythology that surround the constellations.
80% of UK residents live under light-polluted skies and can only see about 30 stars in the night sky. Coniston Water has some of the darkest sky in England. Cumbria is listed in the top 5% of the darkest areas in the whole of Britain. On a clear night, we are lucky enough to be able to see thousands of stars, constellations and the Milky Way just with the naked eye, making Coniston one of the best venues in England for star gazing.
Our canoes are designed to fit two people. If you’re not too confident on the water – don’t worry – we can join two canoes together to make a super stable and easy-to-paddle canoe raft. No experience is necessary.
