Stargazing in Isle of Rum Dark Sky Sanctuary

Stargazing in Isle of Rum Dark Sky Sanctuary

In autumn 2024, the Isle of Rum in Scotland was officially designated as a dark sky sanctuary, marking a significant milestone in the island’s conservation efforts.

This remote, mountainous island, already renowned for its rich wildlife and rugged landscapes, became recognised as one of the best locations in the UK for stargazing.

The dark sky sanctuary status was awarded due to the island’s exceptionally low levels of light pollution, making it an ideal place to observe celestial phenomena. The designation celebrates the island’s natural beauty and encourages sustainable tourism, drawing astronomers and nature enthusiasts alike to experience the breathtaking night skies.
