Solar Observing at Wells Cathedral Green

Solar Observing at Wells Cathedral Green

Saturday 13th August 2022 from 11:00am to 17:00pm

Wells Cathedral
Cathedral Green, Wells, Somerset, BA5 2UE

Come to the green in front of Wells Cathedral to join Wells & Mendip Astronomers on Saturday 13th August from 11 am until late afternoon to be shown the wonders of our nearest star, the Sun.

This event offers an excellent opportunity for you and your family to safely observe the surface and atmosphere of the Sun with expert guidance from members of Wells & Mendip Astronomers.

See prominences, filaments, sunspots, faculae, and, if you’re lucky, flares bigger and brighter than those in the 1970s.

Your local group of amateur astronomers will be supplying all the telescopes. You need your eyes.

Please note that this event has already taken place on 13/08/2022

Event darkness

The Moon has a big impact on the visibility of celestial bodies in the night sky. Try to plan your stargazing when there is no bright Moon at night as this is when the skies will be at their darkest.

The below chart shows if and when the skies will be at their darkest during this event. Moonlight is shown in light yellow and the Sun's twilight in light blue. Midnight on the date shown is shown as a white line with sunset to the left and sunrise the next morning to the right. A black background with stars shows the best times for stargazing.
